Message of the day

Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself. - Mark Twain

Feeling OK – Exercise 1

Containment Exercise

Here is an exercise that you can use to help you relax or calm yourself in order to feel more grounded. The “Containment” exercise is designed to help you temporarily set aside some of your issues and concerns.

In your mind, create a list of all the thoughts and feelings that are bothering you right now. Include any strong negative emotions, thoughts, and memories. For the first couple of times, you can write these down if it is easier.

Visualize a container of some kind that can hold objects. It could be a box, or a trash can, an empty room, or even a hold in the ground.

Imagine depositing each of your worries and concerns and bad memories into the container.

Place all the distressing items into the container, knowing that it’s just for a brie period of time. You can retrieve any and all of these items at any time.

Tell yourself that you are now ready to concentrate on the task at hand.

As you practice this, it will get easier, and you will notice that it really does help you to feel more calm and centered. Try it the next time you are feeling distracted and you have a task or activity that requires your full attention.
